The Gibson Les Paul Guitar

Welcome to my site on Gibson Les Paul Guitars!

My first ever electric guitar was a Les Paul copy , and I was hooked! – It would be many years before I could afford the “real thing” but that only made the desire stronger. This website is a fan site for all things Gibson Les Paul Guitar.

There are a variety of opinions and interpretations that colour how the introduction of the Les Pas has been seen by history.

In many ways it was a reaction to the boom of interest in electric guitars, and to the introduction of early Fender guitars the fuelled the craze. It was fuelled by the cult than explosion in rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and ultimately heavy rock. It was also very much a craze in its own right. It sounds different to stratocasters.

The Les Paul model was the combined efforts of the Gibson Corporation, and the jazz guitarist Les Paul, who was brought on board by then President Ted Mcarty as a consultant. Les was already an innovator in instrument design.

It is not clear how much of the ultimate design Les Paul was responsible for, and arguments rage as to whether the instrument was developed in essence already by Gibson, and badged by Les Paul, or whether he had a much greater hand in the development of it. Certain parts of the guitar were certainly his – and other parts certainly rejected by Gibson

The design of the Les Paul was certainly way different from the fenders, both in structure – for example neck attachement and also in design styling, the curves all radically different. It was a deviation from the hollowed body models too. When Les Paul first approached Gibson with solid body models they were rejected, only later was he brought into the team. Gibson already had hollow bodied guitars.

Les Paul pressed for the colour black or gold, black because it made the guitarist look better, and gold because it would look expensive. Certainly Gibson Les Paul guitars showed greater class in finishes than the comparitively monotonic colours associated with fenders.

A number of features distinguish the Gibson and Fender Guitars. Stringing being one. The maple and wood choices led to the resonances and classic sound associated with the Les Paul. The design of pickups and introduction of the humbucker another – which revolutionised electric guitars..

The initial offer of two guitars in the range in gold and black eventually became models across the price brackets, offering both the novice and the professional guitarist some choices.

It was for several years that guitars were given serial numbers, and the early models are certainly collectable, although lack some of the features that make them a realistic competitor for later models.

From the early days many models have appeared.
The Gibson Les Paul remains for all time a classic and iconic design

Question by : What do you think of the Epiphone Les Paul Prophecy Custom EX?
At first I liked the Les Paul Standard, but now my eyes are on the Prophecy EX. Except it is three hundred dollars more than the standard, and I’m just a beginner. Is it worth buying or should I go with the standard?

Question by Braqs: Whats the difference btw the les paul custom shop and the les paul standard from today?
if i buy a les paul now, will it be like considered a custom shop in like 50 years? But I also heard that Custom shops are made better and sound better. But wouldnt that mean that every ten years gibson makes each guitar worse? Like Im deciding if I should buy the 3000 dollar goldtop 56 or the les paul standard.

Q&A: epiphone les paul custom or standard? which is a better guitar?

Question by James: epiphone les paul custom or standard? which is a better guitar?
I’m buying a secondhand guitar and have my heart set on a les paul. a gibson les paul is way out of my price range and i’ve found lots of epiphone les paul customs and standards for sale. just wondering which is the better guitar? Thanks

Answer by Chuckc
These are bascially the same guitar with cosmetic differences. The Custom has the ornate inlays on the headstock and gold pickups, the standard has no ornate inlays on the headstock and chrome pickups. You are paying for the glitz but not any additional sound.

For some reason your question has appeared in Visual Arts (Painting).

Try asking this in Entertainment & Music (Music).

The answer is going to be subjective, one person’s great guitar is guaranteed to be someone else’s disaster. Personally I’d go for the Les Paul copy (but I don’t much like either of them, I’d rather have a Telecaster).
Agree to differ and have a drink instead.

Is it worth trying to fix my custom Les Paul guitar or just buy a Les Paul 100?

Question by Ben S: Is it worth trying to fix my custom Les Paul guitar or just buy a Les Paul 100?
Me and my grandpa built this Les Paul that looks sick. Of course it doesn’t work well at all and the local guitar shop worker isn’t even sure he can fix it. I have to spend 115 bucks minimum too, it’ll prob go up to 200. Now is it worth getting this possibly fixed, or should I just buy a Les Paul from epiphone and possibly disappoint my grandfather.

Best answer:

Answer by Ken C
When you say “it doesn’t work”, do you mean the electronics? Unless you’re trying to do some super complicated active electronics in the guitar, that’s no big deal.

Seymour Duncan has a number of wiring diagrams on their website:

http://www.seymourduncan.com

Stewart McDonald is another good reference and source for parts:

http://www.stewmac.com

It shouldn’t be that hard to get it working. Even if you have to put some money in it, you’ll have a one of a kind that’s probably made just as well (if not better) than some P.O.S. import.

You’ll look back at this later and realize how special that guitar really is.

Greetings from Austin, TX

Ken

Q&A: playing a les paul custom through a hot rod deluxe amp, settings?

Question by wondering: playing a les paul custom through a hot rod deluxe amp, settings?
Need a lot of distortion- but it seems really muddy, any advice to getting a great tone?

Best answer:

Answer by Christopher
My God! You’re making my heart stop, mouth water, and ears perk up all at the same time!

In my opinion, any Les Paul Guitar should be considered “THE TONE MASTER” (even some of the Epiphone ones). The only thing I can think of is some advanced EQ’ing (maybe a Parameteric EQ). Something advanced where you can pinpoint & amplify the sound you’re looking for.
